The Meaning Of Martial Arts Rank

What does rank mean in the martial arts?

Colored belts, black belts, levels of proficiency.

Martial arts rank as knowledge or as expectation?

While every school, style, and tradition will have different ranking requirement, many martial arts will have a ranking structure to assist the development of the students at the school.

Rank gives the student movements to work on in a structured format, something to collate and strive for in daily practice, a routine that one can build off of. Rank gives the student a place in class, knowing where one is with the movement, able to ask questions to those of a higher rank, and able to help those with questions of a lower rank.

Rank gives responsibility in the school, what one is expected to learn, know, and be responsible for- pressure in a good way, something to motivate and build on.

Rank is a responsibility.
